Position Summary
SUNY Maritime College deck cadets on shipping assignments are responsible for gaining hands-on, underway experience to meet USCG and academic requirements. They observe and assist with navigation, deck maintenance, cargo operations, and safety drills while completing sea service records, essentially training for a Third Mate license.
The workload is primarily guided by the assigned cadet shipping project under the supervision of experienced Masters and Mates.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- Navigation Assistance: Support bridge officers and learn navigation and shiphandling using equipment like GPS, radar, ECDIS, radio comms, and AIS.
- Cargo & Deck Ops: Participate in dredging operations with the Mates and Dragtenders learning how to load and discharge the hopper and operate the dig tracking software and dredging equipment. Work on deck with the Mates and AB’s to perform maintenance tasks as well as operational duties.
- Safety: Actively participate in safety drills, emergency response training, the company’s Safety Management System, and the company safety culture.
- Academic/Training Completion: Complete the designated Sea Service Project and returning required documentation to the Cadet Shipping Coordinator upon completion.
- Professional Conduct: Report to the coordinator upon boarding, maintain a professional attitude, abide by the Captain’s standing and night orders, and conduct yourself in a manner that represents your school in accordance with its values.
- Adhere to all Weeks Marine safety protocols and regulations on the vessel and in shipyard.
Qualifications
- Enrollment in a recognized Maritime Academy or similar institution with a focus on Marine Transportation.
- A high degree of safety awareness and the ability to follow safety procedures.
- Valid Merchant Mariner Credential, USCG Medical Certificate and TWIC.
- Must pass Company required pre-employment physical and drug screen
- The cadet must be prepared for 8 to12 hr. shift work, working days/nights for a minimum of 90 days.
