Position Overview

 

A Marine Painter is responsible for preparing and coating surfaces on ships, boats, barges, offshore structures, and marine equipment. The role focuses on corrosion protection, surface finishing, and ensuring vessels meet safety, durability, and industry standards. Marine painters work in the facility, fabrication shops, and onboard vessels.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Prepare steel and aluminum surfaces using grinding, sanding, needle‑gunning, blasting, water‑jetting, and other approved methods.
  • Apply marine coatings including primers, epoxies, urethanes, anti‑fouling, and specialty protective systems used across the Weeks Marine fleet.
  • Mix, thin, and adjust coatings in accordance with manufacturer TDS and project specifications.
  • Operate painting equipment such as airless sprayers, pressure pots, HVLP guns, and related tools.
  • Mask and protect work areas to maintain clean application and prevent overspray on equipment, piping, and adjacent structures.
  • Perform quality checks including surface profile verification, DFT readings, and visual inspection to ensure compliance with Weeks Marine and industry standards.
  • Work safely in shipyard and vessel environments including confined spaces, elevated areas, and active production zones.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces to support safe, efficient operations.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in marine, industrial, or shipyard painting with strong knowledge of surface prep and coating systems.
  • Ability to read and follow coating specifications and TDS for all materials used.
  • Proficiency with spray application and hand‑tool coating methods.
  • Understanding of safety protocols including respirator use, fall protection, confined‑space entry, and hazardous‑materials handling.
  • Physical ability to climb, bend, lift, and work in confined or elevated spaces in a shipyard environment.
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Able to observe and comply with all safety and project rules
