Position Summary

Responsible for the overall safety and management of crew and vessel. They must effectively lead and manage crew members' daily activities and production according to the project timeline, plans, specifications, codes and industry standards and provide the necessary training on proper safety and operational procedures. Work with or supervise other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work as directed by Towing and/or project personnel.
  • Stand wheelhouse watch on assigned vessel.
  • Comply with all state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for executing WMI Towing Safety Management System (TSMS) aboard assigned vessel.
  • Preparation, management and facilitation of safety meetings and safety drills.
  • Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA).
  • Delegate daily tasks to crew to ensure operational readiness.
  • Oversees training and mentoring of crew members.
  • Follows company and work site safety policies/procedures and commits to an “incident and injury free” work environment.
  • Directly supervises all crewmembers.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, directing work and appraising performance, disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of New York Harbor
  • 10+ years total experience with at least 5 years of experience in a Captain role.
  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions and communicate effectively with craft workers under his/her supervision and management/supervision.
  • Ability to work rotational 12 hour watch.
  • Ability to work 28 days on, 28 days off**
  • Strong knowledge of industry related software.

  • Merchant Mariners Credentials (MMC)
    • Master or Mate of Towing w/ Near Coastal and Western Rivers endorsement 
    • Vessel Security Officer (VSO)
    • Radar Observer
  • USCG Medical Certificate
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit (MP)
  • Driver’s license
  • CPR/AED First Aid Certification
  • Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
  • Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Performs other duties as required.
