Position Summary
The Master Mechanic - Friction/Hydraulic Cranes is a senior-level technician responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of all crane systems—primarily friction and hydraulic models—used in marine construction, dredging, and heavy lifting operations. This position is based at Weeks Marine’s shipyard in Bourg, LA, and supports both yard-based maintenance and on-site vessel support as needed. Candidates must have a positive attitude towards team members, hard work, strong work ethic and commitment to quality and safety.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- Diagnose and repair complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems on heavy lift cranes (e.g., Clyde, Dravo, American, Manitowoc, Link-Belt, Liebherr).
- Perform complete overhauls of friction and hydraulic crane components including engines, winches, clutches, gearboxes, swing drives, and booms.
- Conduct routine and preventive maintenance on cranes to ensure operational safety and minimize downtime.
- Interpret technical manuals, load charts, schematics, and OEM documentation for troubleshooting and compliance.
- Maintain detailed service records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements (USCG, OSHA, API).
- Supervise and mentor junior mechanics and apprentices; provide hands-on training as needed.
- Interface with vendors and OEM technicians to order parts and coordinate major overhauls or warranty repairs.
- Ensure all work is completed safely and efficiently in compliance with Weeks Marine’s Safety Management System (SMS).
- Respond to emergency breakdowns aboard vessels or in the field as required.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in crane mechanics with emphasis on both friction and hydraulic systems.
• Master-level proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing mobile and pedestal-mounted cranes used in marine or heavy civil construction.
• Familiarity with OSHA 1926 Subpart CC regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret complex hydraulic and electrical schematics.
• Physical capability to lift heavy components and work in confined spaces or at heights.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to vessels or job sites as needed.
Preferred Requirements
- NCCCO Crane Inspector or similar crane mechanic certifications.
- Previous shipyard or offshore construction experience.
- Welding and fabrication experience a plus.
- TWIC card
Work Conditions
- Primarily based in the Bourg shipyard but may require travel to vessels, barges, or field locations.
- Work schedule may include overtime and weekend availability depending on operational needs.
- Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies, and parts up to 50 lbs. unassisted regularly.
- Must be able to tolerate harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, heights, rough seas, vibrations, and high noise levels.
- Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend, squat, crawl, climb ladders, or stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to perform other physical activities as part of equipment repair, survey, or inspection.
